Yusuke FURUSAWA

Yusuke Furusawa (b. 1995, Fukuoka) is a Japanese composer working across instrumental music and electronic music, including live electronics.
He graduated from the Tokyo College of Music (Department of Composition and Conducting, composition course) in 2018 and completed his master’s degree in composition at its graduate school in 2022. He studied composition with Atsuro Kono, Keiko Harada, Motoharu Kawashima, Toshio Hosokawa and Takeshi Tsuchiya, and electronics with Sumihisa Arima.
His string trio Schön (2017) was selected at the 22nd Tokyo International Chamber Music Composition Competition, and Three Studies for Accordion (2015) was published by EDITION AVANTUS (Germany) in 2018. In 2019 his wind quintet Finger Puppets received its world premiere by Gendai Sozo Tokyo at the Japan Federation of Composers’ “Newcomers” concert at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall. In December 2025, Contact with Invisible Dimensions for solo shakuhachi received its world premiere by Reison Kuroda at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, in the JFC concert “Japanese Composers 2025 – with The Shakuhachi 5”, and in August 2026 Guided by Gravity and Breath… for solo violin was premiered by Yasutaka Hemmi. Other works include Recollect for orchestra (2018), the electronic work The Centaur’s Birth (2021), Consciousness I for flute and live electronics (2022) and Overdose for string quartet (2023).
In his recent works he is interested in separating the elements of the performer’s physical action — breath, fingering, the centre of gravity — and notating each of them independently, so that sound emerges from their interaction. By reaching the layers of the body hidden behind conventional technique, the pieces seek to extend the physical possibilities of performance.
Alongside composition, he develops tools for music-making: audio plugins built with Max/MSP, RNBO and JUCE, a personal library for OpenMusic called OMYusuke, and a MIDI controller built on the Raspberry Pi Pico.
He is a member of the Japan Federation of Composers.
